4-29-11

Today, hearts around the world watched in awe as Prince William and Kate Middleton were wed at Westminster Abbey in London. The ceremony which took place at the lovely hour of 5 a.m. here on Central Time in Illinois (and yes, I am one of those crazies who set their alarm to watch it) and was a spectacle consisting of a massive men's and boy's choir, horse and carriages, gorgeous trees lining the aisle, and most importantly... the dress. By the way, I must divulge my pride in myself as I was able to correctly predict the designer who would make Kate Middleton's dress: Sarah Burton of Alexander MacQueen. Here's my reasoning: 1. Alexander MacQueen is a British fashion house 2. Kate is known for her modern style and it doesn't get much more modern than MacQueen 3. Alexander MacQueen's tragic death last year would make this a nice tribute to the iconic designer, and 4. Kate Middleton was after all, a commoner, and with that being said it can be expected for her to go with the most recognizable brand: once again Alexander MacQueen. All of this thrown together made for a beautiful timeless v-necked gown with a mid-sized train. Some other fashion statements made at the wedding were the Queen's love of the color yellow and the daughter's of ex-Dutchess Fergie Ferguson's terrible taste in hats.
With all of this liveliness, of course, came a since of sadness as the 2 billion spectators remembered the wedding of Princess Diana to Prince Charles, which obviously ended in tragedy. However, there are luckily many reasons to more positively view this marriage. (It's just a great day for lists, isn't it?) 1. Most importantly, Prince William and the now Princess Catherine actually seem to actually like each other. Furthermore, this isn't a situation with another Camilla to come and ruin everything. 2. William and Kate are a modern couple who have taken their time to get to know one another before taking this step of marriage, a stark contrast to Charles's and Diana's rushed marriage 3. The Queen seems to actually like Kate. (Not that I'm saying I'm a conspiracy theorist about the death of Diana, but you know... just in case.)
However, of course there were many similarities between the two ceremonies as well, including both acting as shows of the grandeur of the royal family and both leading to the heart's of women and girl's 'round the world being broken at the prospect of no longer being able to become the wife of the future King of England. Well at least there's still Harry.

BREAKING NEWS: Prince Harry is back together with his longtime girlfriend, Chelsy Davy.

Sorry.
